PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Sunday will mark the 15th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, and Portland police offers and firefighters will join forces to honor their fallen brothers and sisters with some friendly competition in a soccer match at Providence Park.

Firefighter Kurt Sommer will be playing in the game for the third year in a row, and said the event is a chance to celebrate the lives that made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

“It’s a great time to celebrate,” he said. “Bring families down and think about all the lives that were lost on 9/11 and the sacrifices that were made out there.”

Along with paying tribute to those lost on September 11, participants are asking for donations for Portland Fire & Rescue’s charity, Toy & Joy Makers, and for the Portland Police Bureau’s cause, the Sunshine Division.

The game is free to the public with a suggested donation of non-perishable food items or new toys.

Portland firefighters have won the match the last two years in a row, so major bragging rights are on the line. The game starts at noon on Sunday at Providence Park.
