PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Tara Ford shot and killed an intruder inside her home to protect her young children, and now the desperate 911 call the Portland mom made just moments after has been released.

The incident happened in late June at a home on Southeast 118th Place and Southeast Boise Street.

Ford no longer lives there, but the released 911 call is offering insight into what she said she had to do to protect her family.

In the early morning hours of June 26, the 33-year-old mother came home with her 10-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. Moments later, she made this dramatic call for help.

“Um, I had an intruder in my house and I had to shoot him, in my daughter’s room,” she said on the recording.

Ford explained that her daughter tried to go in her room, but the door wouldn’t open. Then they heard someone moaning on the other side, so Ford sent her kids to another room and grabbed her gun.

The 911 operator asked her to outline what had happened that led Ford to taking the shot, asking if the man was holding the door shut.

“I opened the door and he was in my house!” Ford answered. “He was in my daughter’s room!”

The man ford shot was 59-year-old David McCrary. Police don’t know why he broke into the house, but they say he’d been having mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.

McCrary died on scene. Ford told the dispatcher he didn’t say anything to her before she fired, but she felt that she and her children were in serious danger.

On the recording, the dispatcher was heard asking if McCrary had any weapons, to which Ford answered, “no,” adding, “I was just trying to protect my children.”

In late July, a grand jury found that Ford’s use of deadly force was justified.
