PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Crews were back out on the Springwater Trail Monday working to clean up the corridor after hundreds of homeless people were ordered to leave 12 days ago.

Crews have spent the last couple weeks picking up garbage and hazards in several acres of the trail area.

The cleanup efforts Monday started at Beggars Tick Park in southeast Portland.

It was estimated that up to 500 people lived along the corridor before the mayor's office announced the trails would be off-limits and cleaned up.

One of the biggest controversies in the cleanup are questions about where the homeless will go.

The city does not have enough shelter space to house them all, and southeast Portland resident Sean Lucas said Mayor Charlie Hales needs to do more about the homelessness issue.

"He lives up in the West Hills,” Lucas told FOX 12 Monday. “Does he have to worry about his grandchildren going to school, getting on the bus a half a block from drug users and criminals? Because that's all they are."

City leaders plan to open a shelter at Terminal One later this fall that is expected to house up to 400 people.

So far, crews working on the area around the Springwater corridor have cleaned up nearly 1,900 needles and filled more than 20 dump trucks with garbage from the trails.
