PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Dozens of people lined up Monday morning to get a free vision exam and eyeglasses in northwest Portland thanks to the vision insurance company VSP.

The temporary clinic is available for anyone who can’t afford to go to the optometrist or pick out glasses on their own, and VSP staff said they expect to serve a thousand people over the course of four days.

The clinic opened Monday morning at Transition Projects on Northwest Hoyt Street, where doctors volunteered their time and lenses and frames were donated for anyone who needed glasses.

People qualify for this clinic if they don’t have vision insurance, can’t afford glasses and have a social security number.

Workers at the clinic also noted that if the lines are too long, vouchers will be given out for free services at a VSP partner clinic.

The clinic staff believes the service really goes a long way for people who haven’t been able to fill out job applications or drive a car because their vision isn’t good enough and said the screenings can have health benefits, too.

“They can detect diabetes early, they can detect high blood pressure, because they actually look in the back of the eye, and so getting an eye exam some of these people for the first time are being diagnosed with conditions they didn’t know they had,” VSP staffer Lori Fanning explained.

The clinic runs through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. To 4:00 p.m. Patients are being seen on a first come, first served basis.
