Neighbors rallying to help man pay for service dog's surgery

Posted: Updated:

A local senior citizen is turning to the community for help after his service dog was injured.

Her name is Daisy, and besides being a source of comfort for her owner she is a big hit in the Cornelius community.

She can't get out and about to meet all her fans now, though because she tore her ACL.

Daisy’s owner Diego Patron said many in the community have been asking about his pet.

“I used to go all over this community. Everybody knows her and knows me, and they were asking ‘Where's Daisy, where's Daisy?’” he said.

It is not hard to see why Daisy is such a big hit in Cornelius. Patron said he takes her everywhere, spreading the joy he receives from his therapy and emotional support dog.

“My wife died ten years ago and my son died a few years ago. He was just 46 and my doctor recommended I get her for my depression,” he explained. “When things get bad she knows things aren't going right and she comes right by me and stands by me.”

Patron said Daisy went for a little sprint through a field then came back limping.

Veterinarians at the Cornelius Vet Clinic found she has a torn ACL in her left rear leg. She needs surgery and post-operation care that will cost close to $5,000, money Patron says he doesn’t have.

“I just don't have that type of funds. I live off of Social Security only, so when something like this happens and she's part of my life, it's made a difference being without her,” he said.

So for now, Daisy is sidelined and sedated. A friend of Patron's set up a GoFundMe page for Daisy which has already raised over $1,000.

Patron said he is overwhelmed by the money raised towards the surgery, but there is still a way to go until Daisy can be back with her adoring public.

He prefers people donate directly to the Cornelius Vet Clinic by calling 503-357-2525 and referencing Daisy. Any donations that exceed the goal will be donated to a special fund at the clinic that helps pet owners in special circumstances.
