PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It's called Harbor of Hope and it's the latest development project that could eventually be Portland's largest homeless shelter.

The people behind the project showed off their latest plans for Terminal 1, a 15-acre industrial site in northwest Portland, at an event that was held on Wednesday night.

The event was also focused on bringing the community together.

Opponents say the site is contaminated, and it ties up valuable industrial property that could be otherwise sold. But others believe this could be a huge step for solving Portland's homeless crisis.

Fox 12 spoke with one of the developers, Homer Williams, who says the project can't happen without support. Williams said he believes Portland is a caring community and we need to help everyone in it.

"These are our homeless, these are our citizens. They don't want to be there. We've got to give them the option to come to a safe place so that they can get three meals, so that they can get medical care and then to help them try to get on with their life," said Williams.

Williams said he hopes Wednesday's event helped neighbors and nearby businesses rid any concerns of the shelter coming to the industrial area.

Harbor of Hope with start with 100 beds, and if it's successful, the shelter can expand to about 400 beds.

The shelter was originally slotted to open in October but Williams said they need to finalize a few things and hasn't announced the exact date of when the shelter will open.
