Union Pacific: Man hit, killed by freight train in NE Portland

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police are working to identify the body of a man found on the railroad tracks after a Union Pacific Railroad engineer reported that a person had been hit by a train.

Police from Gresham and Portland responded to the scene between 162nd and 181st in Northeast Portland around 3:56 a.m Thursday.

The engineer of a Union Pacific freight train told police his train hit a pedestrian while traveling eastbound. 

Gresham police confirmed that one man is dead.

More information will be posted as soon as it is available.

This is the second person killed by a train in less than two weeks. A man was hit and killed by a train near Camas on Sept. 5. 

According to BNSF, an average freight train needs more than a mile to come to a stop once it has deployed emergency breaking.
