Ankeny Square in downtown Portland transformed into new food cart pod

Posted: Updated:

Portland is known for its food carts, and now there is a new food cart pod for people to enjoy in downtown Portland.

This new food cart pod is bringing life back to an under-utilized space.

Grubbin' opened on Thursday in Ankeny Square between West Burnside and Southwest Ankeny Street near the North Park blocks.

Grubbin' will not just feature food carts, it will also feature art and music.

Portland Parks and Recreation asked for ideas from people on what to do with the square.

Jamal Gardener had his idea chosen and explains what he hopes to bring to the space.

"It's a community space, it's more than just a stage and a food cart pod but it also is that. It's a place to celebrate diversity so I have cultural food and ways to learn through food and interaction, rather than over your phone or Google," said Gardener.

Gardener is getting to rent the space from the city for $1 a year for two years. He hopes to soon have events happening daily in the square.
