PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a man carrying a rifle in front of the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse Thursday night.

Police said around 5 p.m., Department of Homeland Security saw a man walking towards the courthouse, carrying a sign and a towel wrapped around something.

DHS officers challenged the man as he got near the courthouse.

According to police, the towel slipped off and officers could see the rifle.

The suspect, Matthew Thomas Mglej, 27, dropped the rifle and was arrested without incident.

Police said the rifle was not loaded but had an empty magazine in the rifle.

Mglej was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. He was also cited for a federal firearms violation by DHS officers.
