KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

A woman attempted to save a man from a house fire in Kelso early Friday, but unfortunately was unsuccessful.

Cowlitz County Fire & Rescue responded to a blaze in the 2400 block of Burcham Street around 2:51 a.m.

A woman living in the home was waiting for her carpool ride to work when she heard fire alarms coming from the house, according to firefighters.

She told crews she went back inside and went downstairs to find the basement filled with smoke.

Firefighters said she tried to call out to her friend, a 45-year-old man, in his room through the wall but was overcome by smoke and was forced to evacuate with three dogs.

Initial crews arrived at the scene and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the two-story house. They immediately called for more resources.

Once more firefighters arrived, crews were able to enter the house from the back and contain the blaze. Unfortunately the man did not survive.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fire officials said the home is a total loss.
