Troopers with the Oregon State Police said they investigated four separate deadly crashes in a window of just over 12 hours this weekend that left five people dead.

Around 4:00 pm. Saturday, troopers and emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 22 five miles west of the Santiam Junction.

According to troopers, a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta was headed west when it attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle when the driver, 31-year-old Alexander Shumilov, lost control of the car, sliding off the side of the highway and striking a tree.

Troopers said Shumilov died at the scene.

Just over two hours later, crews responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 18 just east of Lincoln City where troopers said an eastbound 1999 Honda Civic lost control on a wet corner. The vehicle slid into the oncoming lane and hit a 2010 Kia Soul that was headed west.

The driver of the Honda, Woodburn resident Maricela R Trujillo, 42, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital while the two passengers in her vehicle, 20-year-olds Sarah S Trujillo and Rebeca M Amador, both of Woodburn, died in the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle, 23-year-old Douglas J Bender of Milwaukie, was not injured, while his two passengers were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said a fourth person died around 10:00 p.m. on Highway 22 near milepost 14. Troopers said the driver of a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta drifted into the center median before rolling the vehicle, with it coming to rest on the passenger side.

The 49-year-old woman from Keizer driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

A fifth person was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck and a 2004 Ford Explored at the Highway 42 interchange with Interstate 5 around 4:15 a.m. Sunday.

Troopers said the Explorer drifted off the ramp and rolled into the area between the ramp and the highway. It then rolled into both lanes of Highway 42 and was hit by the semi-truck.

The driver of the Ford, 31-year-old Anthony Q Webber of Roseburg, died at the scene, while the driver of the truck, Richard E Arceo, 33, of Pasco, Washington, was sent a Roseburg hospital for minor injuries.
