AGNESS, OR (KPTV) -

A Vancouver woman and her dog were rescued after the woman fell 60 feet off a trail in southern Oregon.

Deputies said 36-year-old Jennifer Edwards had hiked 10 miles in from a trailhead into the Illinois River wilderness area when she fell onto a dried up creek bed near the mouth of Silver Creek.

Curry County Search and Rescue was contacted to assist Josephine County Search and Rescue crews at the scene at around 6 p.m. Saturday

Edwards was able to text her fiance with a satellite-based rescue phone, which provided her GPS location.

Curry County Search and Rescue member Ryan McGinnis hiked the narrow trail for several hours in the dark to reach Edwards by 11:30 p.m.

McGinnis provided first aid to Edwards, who sustained cuts to the back of her head and numerous places on her body.

McGinnis stayed the night at the scene until more crews arrived to help in the morning.

In order for a Coast Guard helicopter and rescue swimmer to reach Edwards, search and rescue workers had to move her across the Illinois River to a safe area.

By 1:50 p.m. Sunday, she was raised to the helicopter and taken to a Grants Pass hospital for treatment.

Her dog was brought back out by the rescue team and later released to family members.

Some search and rescue crew members suffered mild heat exhaustion due to extreme temperatures during the rescue operation Sunday.

"I am very proud of our SAR team and their dedication. This is another perfect example of the professional teamwork between neighboring counties," said Curry County Sheriff John Ward.
