PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Water Bureau crews were forced to close one lane of a Northeast Portland road due to a water main break early Tuesday morning.

Crews closed the northbound lane of Northeast 33rd Avenue between Northeast Morris and Klickitat streets around 2:30 a.m.

Officials said the closure allows them to access and repair the damaged water main, a 24-inch cast iron pipe from 1906.

About 72 homes in the area may be without water service while the main is being repaired, according to PWB. Others may experience discoloration in the water due to uplifted sediment.

The PWB said the water is still safe to drink, but customers should run their tap water until it runs clear just to be safe.

Commuters should expect delays in the closure area. Crews plan to have the lane open by 8 p.m.
