A man who broke into a southeast Portland home and sexually abused a woman who had been sleeping next to her 8-year-old daughter was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.

Brandon Bell, 31, was arrested in April. DNA evidence connected him to the crime that occurred in October 2015.

Police said a woman living in a converted garage adjacent to her brother's home woke up to the smell of cigarettes and a stranger in her room.

Katherine Baker told FOX 12 the man said he was her boyfriend. He grabbed her, kissed her and licked her neck.

Baker said she escaped with her daughter and son.

They went to her brother's home and he grabbed a baseball bat to look for the suspect, but the man got away.

Baker went to the hospital and a sex assault nurse swabbed her neck where the man had licked her. The Oregon State Crime Lab tested the neck swab and found Bell's DNA. A cigarette butt on the floor next to the woman's bed also tested positive for Bell's DNA, according to court documents.

Bell pleaded guilty on Oct. 24 to charges of first-degree sex abuse and first-degree burglary. He was sentenced to 7 ½ years in prison Wednesday.

Court records state Bell has nine previous felony and four misdemeanor convictions, as well as 15 parole violations.
