His notable career has spanned decades, and now actor Ewan McGregor is not only starring in the new crime drama "American Pastoral," he's also directing the film.
He's joined by Jennifer Connelly from "A Beautiful Mind" and "I am Sam" star Dakota Fanning.
Based on the novel by Philip Roth, the movie tells the story of a post-war family struck by tragedy.
McGregor plays a successful businessman and said he enjoyed getting to work on the film from start to finish.
“I really enjoyed it. I liked the creative interaction from everybody from start to finish,” he said. “Working with the writers, all the crew. Working with the actors, this amazing class. There's an amazing class and it was an amazing honor to work with them on these scenes.”
Fanning plays McGregor and Connelly's daughter Mary. She said playing a character during a time of cultural change challenged her skills.
“She's growing up in a time of radical change in America. You see that in her emotions, personality and actions,” she said. “I think Mary is an extremely complex character and very layered and also contradictory to some extent. That was challenging and unlike anything I've done before.”
Fanning also talked about her experience working in Portland with Laika Studios and her desire to come back to the Rose City.
“I've been to Portland it's great,” she said. “I'm just looking for a good reason to come up there. I'm coming soon. There's a lovely guy building my car right now, so maybe I'll be coming up soon to drive it back to LA.”
Moviegoers in Portland can see “American Pastoral at Regal Fox Tower and at the Living Room Theaters.
