A 17-year-old boy is facing charges of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment for causing severe injuries to a 10-week-old baby, according to court documents.

Charges were filed against Keauntay Jones on Thursday. First-degree assault is a Measure 11 offense.

The case began when police responded to a Portland hospital to investigate a baby with a skull fracture and a severe traumatic brain injury on Oct. 7.

Court documents state the girl also had rug burn-type injuries to her face.

A doctor told investigators that the injuries were not accidental and the child was critically ill, a probable cause affidavit states.

The affidavit continues that the brain injury was so severe that doctors believed it would likely be fatal.

Court documents state the baby had been left in the care of Jones, who is related to the child.

A probable cause affidavit states Jones provided detectives with several explanations for the girl's injuries, saying she had fallen out of her rocking seat, before claiming she slipped out of his arms and nearly hit the floor. Court documents state Jones finally said he slipped while carrying the girl and he tossed her forward to avoid landing on top of her.

Investigators said each story was false, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Jones is scheduled to be arraigned in court Nov. 10.
