GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

An elderly Gresham woman gave a man a dollar and let him into her home. He then stole money out of her purse.

The Gresham Police Department reported the incident to caution "everyone to take protective measures to ensure a safe and positive gift-giving experience."

Officers said the woman was recently on a shopping trip with her community living home. She entered a busy store and was approached by a man who asked her for one dollar.

The woman opened her purse, gave the man a buck and he then politely went on his way, according to police.

However, when the woman got home, the same man was apparently waiting for her. Police said he took her grocery bags and offered to bring them inside for her.

The man, who has not been identified, claimed his grandmother lived in the same complex.

He brought the groceries inside and stayed for nearly an hour, talking with the woman.

After he used the bathroom and left, the woman realized he had stolen money from her purse.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 30s.

Gresham police suggested some ways to help others without compromising safety:

  • Avoid opening your wallet or purse in front of someone.
  • Consider bringing them food or goods instead of giving cash.
  • Avoid being alone when offering help, share the experience with a friend.
  • Direct the person to a local nonprofit organization equipped to help.
  • Be assertive or aggressive as needed. Saying no and reporting a concerning encounter is not mean.
  • If you feel someone has followed you, call 911.

Anyone who has recently experienced something similar to the story above is encouraged to call the Gresham Police Department tip line at 503-618-2719.
