Four cases of norovirus reported at Gresham hospital

Posted: Updated: Nov 04, 2016 10:01 PM

Officials at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham say they’re treating four people right now with norovirus.

Hospital administrators say they’re working with the Multnomah County Health Department to get a handle on the virus.

Norovirus is a highly contagious type of gastroenteritis that causes vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps and possible fever. It’s usually not serious, but it can be dangerous for young children and the elderly.

Employees at the hospital have been told to keep a sharp eye out for symptoms of the virus.

Experts say the best way to avoid catching it is with diligent hand washing with soap and water - not hand sanitizer - and also by disinfecting common surfaces often.

Employees of the Mount Hood Medical Center have been told to stay home if they feel ill at all, but officials say they don’t currently have an unusually high number of staff out sick.
