PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Mayor-elect Ted Wheeler and other experts met at the Convention Center on Friday to talk about Portland's housing issues, and what to expect in 2017.

The Portland Home Builders Association and PARR Lumber Company teamed up to put the event together.

Wheeler says the city is expecting to build more than 123,000 housing units over the next 20 years, and that people will keep moving to Portland no matter what the unemployment rates are.

Now, Wheeler wants the city to work to ensure there is availability and affordability in the housing market.

"The city also needs to be more flexible in terms of creating affordable housing options through its zoning and through its codes. We still have an anachronistic and in some cases archaic approaches to zoning in this community that does not reflect the modern nature of the demand side of the equation."

Wheeler added that he's optimistic about Portland's housing possibilities.
