PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who was recently released from jail was arrested after a high-speed chase that saw him hit cars and U.S. Postal Service vehicles, before shearing a power pole in southeast Portland, according to deputies.

A Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted a 2006 Chevy pickup driving in a careless manner along Southeast Scooter Lane near Sunnyside Road in Damascus at 2:30 a.m. Monday.

The deputy attempted to stop the truck, but the driver pulled a U-turn and got stuck on the shoulder of the roadway.

Deputies said the driver, later identified as 23-year-old Peter Georgiy Pukay of Damascus, refused to comply with commands and continued to rev his engine.

Pukay was eventually able to get the truck into four-wheel drive and drove through a neighboring yard, nearly hitting a house, according to deputies.

Pukay continued to drive recklessly, according to investigators, while deputies pursued his truck.

Deputies said Pukay hit an oncoming car, before driving into a post office parking lot in Gresham where he hit several postal vehicles and then crashed through a closed gate.

An Oregon State Police trooper successfully deployed spike strips to flatten tires on the truck.

A video of the chase, taken by a witness, appears to show the truck speeding down the road on just its tire rims, with trailing sparks and smoke behind it.

Near Southeast 156th and Powell Boulevard, the suspect drove off the roadway and slammed into a power pole, shearing it in half.

Deputies said Pukay then drove into the yard of a nearby home and crashed into a parked car. He continued trying to drive the pickup, but it was immobilized due to extensive damage.

Deputies said Pukay sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene before being booked in the Clackamas County Jail on charges including reckless driving, recklessly endangering, criminal mischief, assault, hit and run and parole violation.

Pukay had been released from the Clackamas County Jail on Oct. 31 following an Oct. 22 arrest for parole violation. Deputies said Pukay has an extensive criminal history including charges of theft, burglary, hit and run, assault, ID theft and drug charges involving meth and heroin.

Pukay remained in jail Monday on a parole violation charge, but the other charges were no complainted by the district attorney's office in lieu of an eventual indictment in connection with Monday morning's arrest.

There were no reports of any serious injuries.
