SALEM, OR (AP) -

The secretary of state says more than half of Oregonians who are eligible to vote in the Tuesday election have cast their ballots.

Secretary of State Jeanne P. Atkins said Monday that 1.29 million voters had turned in their ballots. She said that accounts for 50.3 percent of total eligible voters.

The percentage is about even with the turnout at this point in the 2012 general election, and a little behind turnout in the 2008 general election.

Atkins said there was a spike over the weekend in the tri-county Portland metro area.

Oregonians vote by mail. While it's too late to mail in a ballot for it to be counted, voters can take them to drop boxes as long as they do so by 8 p.m. Tuesday.
