Group gathers for election candle light vigil, call for peace before Election Day

In the final hours of the 2016 Presidential Election many Americans say they’ll be glad when it is over with.

According to a study done by the American Psychological Association, 52 percent of adults say this election has been a very, or somewhat significant, source of stress.

“I just wish there wasn’t such a negative connotation with the whole election but it just seems really negative,” voter Kelli Warren said.

But one group in Southwest Portland is hoping to change that attitude.

“If you are doing good things now, you can be doing good things tomorrow,” Andrew Morse with the Dzogchen Shri Singha of Portland said Monday night.

Morse was a part of a group of people from all walks of life, faiths and backgrounds that gathered at the Portland Dharma Center for an election candle light vigil to pray for peace.

“It’s a responsibility that we have is to show our children that there is a better way than to fight,” Carrie Ure said.

The groups message is simple, Tuesday, instead of being divisive and angry, spread peace and compassion.

“Our teacher Kempo says when you are having positive thinking shout it out, when you are having negative thinking be very quite or silent,” Ure said.

They add the only way we’re going to get through this all of this is together.

“Take all of that ability to listen compassionately and put that in our little light and carry that around with us tomorrow,” Ure said.
