Republican Dennis Richardson defeated Democrat Brad Avakian for the Oregon Secretary of State seat Tuesday, becoming the first member of the GOP to win a statewide office in Oregon in more than a decade.

Richardson came out on top with 48 percent of the vote while Avakian only picked up 43 percent.

In addition to being the first GOP candidate to take a state-wide office since 2002, Richardson will be the first Republican secretary of state in nearly 30 years.

The future secretary of state celebrated the end of a successful campaign late Tuesday night, surrounded by his family and a cheering crowd.

“As secretary of state, I am going to function in a nonpartisan way. I will do the job the secretary of state is intended to do,” Richardson said.

Avakian conceded just before 11 p.m., congratulating Richardson on a difficult race.

“This was a hard-fought campaign,” Avakian said in a statement. “I’m proud that we’ve run a substantive, issue-oriented campaign and I want to thank the many volunteers and supporters who have helped us along the way.”

Avakian did not make an appearance at the Democrat watch party at the Oregon Convention Center.
