Business owners concerned about economic impacts of a Trump presidency

Posted: Updated:

Donald Trump's victory in the Presidential Election is already having an impact on the world's financial markets, and now business owners and workers are wondering what a Trump presidency will mean for them.

Economic growth and construction is all around us in Portland, especially in the Pearl District.

Donald Trump has said he's an expert in business, he wants to create more jobs and revamp U.S. trade, but some local experts are holding their breath.

Clarence Belnavis at the Fisher Phillips law firm is an employment attorney and he sees a variety of impacts on the labor force.

All along, Trump has talked about cracking down on illegal immigrants and employers hiring them.

More than small businesses, Belnavis expects that bigger corporation will be impacted by this with increased audits and compliance tests.

Trump has had decent relationships with unions in the past, but Belnavis thinks that could change, and as far as Trump's criticism of U.S. trade policies, he thinks that importers and exporters in Portland could suffer down the road.

"Portland has struggled, I think, to find its footing internationally in trade and everything else. I believe that if the United States is perceived to be more anti-trade, the opportunities that come out of Portland to be able to engage in that could significantly go down."

In a more immediate time frame, Belnavis says he thinks productivity at work in the U.S. will be way down for the rest of this week as the election results sink in.
