PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Though most of the protesters in Portland on Wednesday wanted to show their disapproval of Donald Trump, there were a few people who came out to support the new President-elect.

While most of the protest was peaceful, a scuffle did break out involving a local Republican politician.

"I walking around the crowd with my hands in my pocket and my jacket zipped up and there was a guy that pushed me, and they actually assaulted [my friend] Leo earlier."

Mark Callahan, who you likely remember from your Oregon Voter’s Pamphlet - the Republican running against Ron Wyden for U.S. Senate, found himself in the middle of a confrontation after he says his friend was attacked.

"I was just trying to stick up for my friend here in case he got assaulted again."

Callahan says it started over his political views.

"Just because I'm a Republican, just because I voted for Trump. I have my own freedom of speech. They don't seem to value freedom of speech when it comes from the other side."

After hearing about the protest on the news, Callahan and his friend wanted to check it out but were quickly met with opposition.

"They preach tolerance, then they have their little mob mentality. How are they tolerant when they're pushing other people around who happen to disagree with them?"

And while thousands exercised their right to peacefully protest, Callahan says he feels his First Amendment rights were overlooked.

"I ran for office myself. I got out there to defend freedom of speech. Yet my freedom of speech isn't good enough, it doesn't count when it comes to them. They only want their freedom of speech."
