PDX pop-up shops return for the holidays

Posted: Updated:

If you’re looking for a unique locally made holiday gem, check out the downtown pop-ups. It’s a way for shoppers to find out of the box gifts while giving back to local businesses.

Each year, the Portland Business Alliance gives local shops holiday retail space rent free. Business owners transform the vacant space into temporary retail shops. This year, the four business include Micro Enterprise Services of Oregon, Blanchet House of Hospitality, Via Raiz and Faith Hats.

“I make hats from recycled cashmere sweaters. At my pop-up shop, I’ll actually bring my sewing machine here. It will be good for the customers to see the process,” said designer Faith Jennings.

Many businesses use the pop-up event as a way to get started. Blanchet House of Hospitality staff say it’s a chance to raise more money for its programs. The organization helps men recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. They create wood benches, chairs and cutting boards.

“It’s an unbelievable opportunity. It has the potential to completely support our program. We’d be able to offer more services to those in need,” said Development Manager Kelly Wetherald.

PDX Pop-Up shops is throwing a preview party on 606 SW 9th Nov. 10th from 5-7 p.m. The shops will open for the holidays November 11th and remain open through Christmas Eve. You can visit the pop-ups Tuesdays – Saturdays 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
