PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon voters returned a record 2.02 million ballots for the 2016 general election.

The previous record in Oregon was set in 2008 with 1.84 million ballots returned.

The secretary of state announced the updated figures Thursday, which showed an increase from the initial statistics reported by state leaders Wednesday.

The updated ballot count shows 78.9 percent of eligible voters returned their ballots.

Information on the turnout of people registered through the Oregon Motor Voter program will be released next week.

Of the 2 million ballots cast statewide, more than 28,000 are being challenged and reviewed for issues like a missing signature or a signature that doesn't match the registration record.

Voters have 14 days after the election to resolve a challenged ballot.

Those with a challenged ballot are notified by their county election office.
