Portland pot security company expanding into storage, transportation

Posted: Updated:

It is cannabis harvest season in Oregon.

Legal sales of cannabis in the United States grew to $5.7 billion last year according to cannabis research group Arcview, and they're projecting that number will soar this year.

Marijuana is still illegal on a federal level, though, meaning pot shops have to operate on an all-cash basis.

One local company is launching a new service for shops and growers by transporting their goods and their cash.

Three years ago, Noah Stokes realized there was a big opportunity to provide security for the cannabis industry, so he started CannaGuard.

The company started off selling security systems, and it has now expanded to offer cash and product transport as well as storage.

“We've been seeing this need for about a year and a half. Nobody else was going to touch it, nobody else was servicing market, so we did it ourselves,” Stokes said. “Our ideal customer is someone southern Oregon, an outdoor grower, or in northern Oregon. They just harvested 40,000 square feet of product. They're drying it, they don't have space to physically store that product.”

Based in Beaverton, the company’s building has 15,000 square feet of storage space, all for dried marijuana.

“We're renting out crates, and if people want to fill them to the max they can,” Stokes explained. “If they are only half full, it’s still renting out that space, kind of like a self-storage, only people can't come here and unload it themselves. We'll do that for them.”

Customers can store as much product as they want. Each crate holds seven to ten pounds.

“It's secure, it’s insured, it’s guarded, it’s licensed,” Stokes said. “So instead of someone having to create this having to create this entire infrastructure for a secure shell and monitoring and cameras and electronics just for their two crates, we can do it for 50 crates.”

CannaGuard also has armored vehicles equipped with high-tech gear to protect the product and the cash it generates.

So far the company has worked with more than 4,500 applicants and has put together more than 400 custom security systems in Oregon, Washington, and California.

Stokes says the company’s goal is to help people legally store what they may not be able to on their own.

CannaGuard is anticipating getting their official license from the city of Portland Friday when they will officially launch the transport and storage service.
