Veterans Day events honor those who have served our country

Friday is Veterans Day, when we honor those who have served in the armed forces.

Several events in honor of veterans are taking place around area.

Portland's annual Veterans Day parade takes place in the Hollywood District. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at Northeast 40th Avenue and Tillamook Street and ends at 48th and Sandy.

Washington County will holds its own Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the memorial on Northeast Veterans Drive and 34th Avenue. The ceremony is expected to last about an hour.

At the University of Portland, a 24-hour vigil starts at 11 a.m. at the praying hands/broken wall memorial on the campus's east quadrangle.

Some businesses are also offering special deals and discounts to veterans.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is offering free admission to veterans and active duty military on Friday. Family members who accompany them can get a 10 percent discount on admission.

IHOP is offering free pancakes to all veterans and active duty military members from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

TopGolf is offering a special discount to veterans and active duty military.

Veterans can also get a free entree at Olive Garden locations Friday.
