PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

More than 40 years ago, Vernon Ross started the Veteran's Day Parade in Portland's Hollywood District. Since then, the event has become a tradition for service people, and their loved ones, to come together from all around the area to honor the military.

As the 42nd annual Ross Hollywood Chapel Veterans Day Parade got underway Friday morning, people lined the sides of Northeast Sandy Boulevard as bands, floats and motorcycles marched in honor of service men and women.

For some people it was an opportunity to remember how important military service is to the country.

"Without our veterans, where are we? They are the back bone of this country, they really are. They should be honored," said Donna Hendrickson.

For some of the veterans in the parade, the parade was about getting support from the community for their time in the service.

"It feels really great because we've been to a couple of events through the years where the community didn't really come out and support us. So it's really nice of the people of the community to come out here and support us."

Harley-Davidson also honored service people. They rolled out the northwest's first and only motorcycle hearse at the event.

On lookers said the parade reminded them why people serve in the military.

"You know, that's one of the best ways to show that you are patriotic and you love this country and you stand up for what you believe in. And you do it to allow all of us to have all the freedoms we have," said Trisha Holm.

The annual parade started on Northeast 40th and ended with the raising of the American flag at the Ross Hollywood Chapel.
