Portland Trail Blazers players help out at Oregon Food Bank

Posted: Updated:

One day after their overtime victory against Sacramento, some members of the Portland Trail Blazers used their off-day to volunteer in the community for the NBA's Commitment to Service Initiative at the Oregon Food Bank.

"Sometimes it doesn't even cross your mind that there is hunger, not only in the world, but in our own backyard," said Blazers center Mason Plumlee.

For six members of the Trail Blazers, their off-day Saturday packed and sorted a whole lot of assists.

"I have a lot of other free time but it's like, just take an hour out of your day to help somebody who is in need, it goes a long way man," said Blazers guard Allen Crabbe.

While their work may not show up on the hustle board, Portland's partnership with the NBA and USO Northwest deserves a major salute.

"Because of what we did, we are going to help feed tens of thousands of people," said Blazers forward Meyers Leonard.

For Leonard, he comes from a military family. His brother is a Marine who has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

"It is important to really honor them and give them a chance to come back and feel accepted and wanted and know that people will truly appreciate what they did," Leonard said.

After a week of turmoil and anger in the streets of the Rose City, the guys were more than happy to spread the love in Rip City.

"We are more than just basketball players," said Crabbe. "We are people who genuinely care about the things that are going on in the community out here."

Leonard said, "I was raised to love everybody. Hopefully, it all dies out and we just get back to our normal, 'keep Portland weird' type ways."

The Blazers return home to the Moda Center Sunday night against Denver.
