Transportation officials warn people to prepare for winter weather

Posted: Updated:

Winter will be here before we know it, and Oregon Department of Transportation officials got together Monday morning to inform commuters about the dangers of winter driving.

Police and ODOT officials held a press conference to remind the public of ways to prepare for winter storms and driving.

The event included snowplows, sand spreaders and deicers on display.

Officials say driving safety is the top priority.

"So we have an operating principal, it's called safety over schedules. It means that if it's not safe for our operators, our riders, our equipment, we will alter service. It really just comes down to safety," said TriMet representative Mary Fetsch.

Officials say they will work together this season to keep people safe. They encourage drivers to plan ahead, consider telecommuting and use public transit during severe weather.
