CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A deputy was shot in the leg by a man who had been hit by a car early Tuesday morning, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting took place near the area of Southeast 139th Avenue and Sunnyside Road around 6:21 a.m.

Deputies said the shooting started after a report of a person getting hit by a car.

A Clackamas County deputy responded to the scene and found the man who reported being hit by a car. The injured pedestrian and the deputy were involved in a struggle, according to investigators, and the deputy was shot in the leg.

The deputy was able to restrain the suspect until help arrived.

The sheriff's office reports one civilian was in the patrol car for a ride-along at the time the incident unfolded. Investigators said that person, along with another person, helped the deputy restrain the suspect and provided medical aid.

The injured deputy and the suspect were taken to the hospital. The deputy, who is contracted to the Happy Valley Police Department, is expected to be OK.

The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Steven W. Wilson of Portland. He remained in the hospital late Tuesday afternoon.
