SANDY, OR (KPTV) -

A historic campsite building in Sandy was destroyed in a fire, and investigators say it's clearly arson.

The stone fireplace is the only thing left standing of the 55-year-old pavilion shelter used as an educational center at the old Roslyn Lake Campground.

Sandy Fire Chief Phil Schneider says the suspect(s) gathered items from around the pavilion like chairs, tables, and cook tops, and put them in a big pile and then lit the pile on fire.

Tony Deis with Trackers Earth says the pavilion was a big part of his program and the community as a whole.

"In a program where it's about trust and care and respect for the natural world, there's somebody that invades our space and doesn't give us that same care and respect," said Deis.

Trees near the building were charred. Deis says they are very lucky it happened this time of year after a wet October, or the fire could have spread to the forest.

Officials said the fire is not canceling any of the Trackers Earth programs.

Sandy Fire Department is asking for the public's help finding who is responsible for the fire.
