Local homebound seniors receive robotic companion pets

Posted: Updated:

Some homebound senior citizens are getting a new companion, thanks to a toy company.

On Wednesday, Meals on Wheels teamed up with Hasbro to deliver Joy For All Companion Pets to homebound seniors.

The pets look, feel, and sound like real pets – and allow people to have a pet without caring for a real one. The companion pet responds to petting, hugging and motion.

Hasbro explains why they started creating this line of pets.

"We've been making animatronic pets for a very long period of time focused on children. A year ago we started this brand focused on aging loved ones based on the insights that we have from our existing products,” said Andrew Jeas, director of global brand strategy for Hasbro.

On Wednesday, Lake Oswego resident Martha got an orange tabby cat companion pet.

This is the first time Hasbro has teamed up with Meals on Wheels in Oregon to bring these pets to seniors here.
