WARRENTON, OR (KPTV) -

It was a wild scene on the Columbia River where a man says he caught cell phone video of a great white shark attacking a seal.

Josh Robb was on a crabbing trip with his family near Warrenton Sunday when he got video of something much larger in the water.

It was the sight of a seal struggling in the Columbia River that made him grab his cell phone and start rolling.

He was on a small, 18-foot boat when he saw the seal under attack.

“My father-in-law says, ‘Look at the blood in the water. Oh my gosh, what is that?’” Robb said.

The predator was underwater and didn’t show itself, though, until it was next to the boat.

“That shark came out of the water, head and all. From head to tail he looked like he was 12 to 15 feet and he just took the seal down,” Robb said. We were just blown away, and after seeing the size of the shark, we were kind of in agreement on, ‘Yeah, might be time to get out of here. We’re going to need a bigger boat for this one.’”

Robb said their boat was only 500 or 600 yards from shore, near the Sturgeon Paul’s Boat launch.

He couldn’t believe a shark would come that far in and says the people on shore didn’t either. Until they saw the video.

“I watch a lot of nature channels, and you see it on TV, but to see it in real life it’s just a whole different experience,” Robb said. “I’m still blown away. How often do you get to see that?”

Robb said it was a little nerve-racking being in such a small boat, but he called it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
