Ice skating rink at Lloyd Center reopens

Posted: Updated:

Since 1960, the ice rink at Lloyd Center mall has been "the place to be" for ice skaters and hockey players alike. Now after nearly a year of renovations, the rink has reopened with some fun new additions.

The blades of eager skaters shaved ice at the Lloyd Center for the grand reopening of the famous ice rink.

Centered around a 50-foot Christmas tree, the rink has been remodeled into a smaller, oval shape. Snow now falls onto the mall's centerpiece.

"Yeah, it's been about a year and it feels wonderful," said Kay Kyco, who has been skating at the Lloyd Center for seven years.

She says she misses the community built on the ice.

"I miss the people. The friends I'm seeing today for the first time in a year, some of them went to other rinks," said Kyco. "But I just took the time off and roller skated to keep in shape."

New construction makes the rink visible from three balconies of the mall and allows spectators to get closer to where the action is.

"I'm glad that people can come up to the rail and talk to you," said skater Claudia Zinser. "That's one of the things we like, it's so friendly here."

For some skaters, the new rink still brings back memories of the old.

"It used to be open air, and then on this end where the rink is now they used to have stairs and they used to have all the schools come and play music with choirs and sing. And when it was cold, it was cold and when it was windy you had to skate against the wind," said Zinser.

Even though it's a new design, most people feel right at home.

"But this is nice… I like it here a lot!" said Kyco.

The rink is now open to the public, and skating hours are posted on their website. As for the snow, that will last until the new year.
