SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A psychiatric patient who walked away from a Salem hospital Thursday has been located.

Police in Philomath stopped a vehicle off Oregon Route 34 at 11:44 a.m. Friday, and inside the vehicle was Jeffrey W. Appelt, 28, who had been last seen at Salem Hospital around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Appelt had originally been a patient at Oregon State Hospital but was transferred to Salem Hospital to be treated for an illness, according to an OSH staff member.

Two OSH staff members assigned to Appelt lost visual contact with him after he did not return from a visit to the restroom.

Appelt was admitted to OSH on Oct. 3 after being transferred from the Oregon Department of Corrections.

He had been convicted of felony possession of a firearm and other fire-related crimes, according to the Oregon Health Authority.
