Driver dies in head-on crash with semi on Highway 99W near Amity

AMITY, OR (KPTV) -

A driver died in a head-on crash with a semi on Highway 99W near Amity in Yamhill County on Friday morning.

Investigators said the driver of a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup was traveling north when he crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound 2006 Freightliner towing a set of double trailers.  

The crash happened at Milepost 42 near the intersection with Highway 233.

The driver of the semi attempted to move to the right shoulder to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so.

The 27-year-old man driving the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was taken by ambulance to the hospital for minor injuries.

The 67-year-old semi driver was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released.

It is unknown what caused the driver of the pickup to veer into the wrong lane, according to police.

His name has not been released by police at this time to allow more family members to be notified.

Oregon State Police was assisted by the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, Amity Police Department, Amity Fire Department, McMinnville Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
