SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

West Salem High School senior Abby Hoppe is the captain of the school's cheer squad and she's also this year's Miss Oregon's Outstanding Teen.

Abby has her fair share of challenges, having been diagnosed with Type I diabetes at 10 years old.

"It doesn't mean you can't do something, it just means you have to work a little harder for that," she says.

Abby spreads that message of perseverance at school but it's what she does at home that makes her extraordinary.l

Abby's siblings also have health problems and Abby helps take care of them.

"I grew up in a very crazy family," Abby says. "I'm a Type 1 diabetic. My sister has Hydrocephalus, my brother has a Lymphedema Tarda in his right leg, and my brother Charlie has very severe Cerebral Palsy, so we all have a huge challenge in our life."

Between school, pageants and cheerleading, Abby puts her family first and cares for her younger brother, Charlie.

"He can't walk, talk, breathe, anything so he kind of needs some help sometimes. But I think it's a group effort we all do together. My parents taught us you aren't in it alone," Abby says.

Abby doesn't see her daily routines as a struggle but as a positive motivation to give back.

"I know it's really easy to give up. It's hard to push forward," Hoppe says. "I want to make sure other kids see that too, no matter what challenge they face."
