PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Someone broke into a van belonging to a local veterans group on Veterans Day.

Last Friday, members of the Northwest Indian Veteran Association were observing Veterans Day at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington
Park.

Their van was parked near the Oregon Zoo. The van was donated by the Wounded Warriors family support program and they’ve only had it for five months.

When they got back to the van, treasurer Regina Woods said the locks on the driver and passenger doors were damaged and her purse and an elder’s leather bag were gone.

The theft has personally cost Woods more than $500. But what’s most disappointing to her is that whoever stole from this organization could’ve just asked for help.

“If they needed help, they could’ve asked us,” said Woods. “On Veterans Day, we did our free lunches. We were going out to lunch after and we had an evening event. They could’ve asked if they needed food if they needed something and we would’ve helped them.”

The total cost to repair the van is around $3,000. If you know anything about the thieves involved, contact Portland police.
