Suspect in deadly St. Johns Bridge bike crash faces new charges

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who was arrested for a crash that killed a cyclist on the St. Johns Bridge is facing more charges.

The charges against Joel Schrantz have been upgraded to manslaughter.

Investigators said his back tires were bald and his license suspended when he hit and killed 55-year-old Mitchell York on October 29.

Schrantz had been previously charged with criminally negligent homicide. He has a long history of traffic crimes including hit-and-run, unauthorized use of a vehicle and driving while suspended.

Following the crash, other cyclists called on the Oregon Department of Transportation to make changes saying the bridge is dangerous for cyclists.

York's death inspired a protest ride on the bridge to bring awareness to the issue.
