Cannabis industry worried about Attorney General pick

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

After this year’s election, recreational marijuana is now legal in seven states with more than twenty states allowing medical marijuana.

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.

The choice of Senator Sessions has many in the marijuana industry worried.

Senator Sessions is a vocal opponent of marijuana legalization and has said: “good people don’t smoke marijuana.”

As Attorney General, Senator Sessions could change how the Justice Department deals with legalized marijuana.

President-elect Trump has said he feels legalization should be an issue left to the states.

That has the Director of the Oregon Cannabis Business Council hopeful.

Donald Morse says “We expect the federal government to respect states’ rights and not do anything to intervene.”

He also says they aren’t sure what Senator Sessions will do but hope he will follow the direction of the new President.

Morse says he expects many more states to legalize marijuana in the coming years.
