A Portland Marine is feeling the love as he battles blood cancer at a Portland hospital.

De'Aundrae Sims, 29, was diagnosed last Thursday with acute myeloid leukemia. Since that time, he's been in the ICU at OHSU receiving chemotherapy.

Sims will likely be in the hospital for the better part of a month. His treatment is keeping him from the annual Marine Ball, an event he has attended every year for the last decade.

"He asked how long the procedure would be so we could get out to go," said Sims' fiancée Dominique Ornelas. "I knew it meant a lot to him."

Sims said, "I would have liked to have joined my brothers and sisters, you know, to celebrate on that wonderful occasion."

Knowing just how much the night meant, Sims' friends, family and fellow Marines decided to bring the ball to OHSU. Sims dressed in his blues, and Dominique brought her gown. Cake from the actual Marine Ball was also brought in.

"The hospital also let me do a walk around the ninth floor and took me out on the balcony," Sims said. "I really had a good time."

Ornelas said, "His Marine brothers and sisters came, it was really nice."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Sims in his fight against cancer.
