Portland Public Schools officials said they are concerned that students are being encouraged by outside organizations to participate in post-election protests.

According to a letter written to PPS parents Sunday, the issue was brought to administrators’ attention by the Portland Police Bureau.

Administrators wrote that officers believe other organizations may be urging students to participate in additional protests throughout the week.

"The police are concerned about the safety of our students if they join any of these outside organizations in their demonstrations,” wrote PPS officials. “We encourage open debate and dialogue, but in a non-violent matter.”

Leaders of the protest group Portland's Resistance released a statement Sunday saying they will be co-hosting a student-led protest with high school students across the Portland area Monday afternoon.

The students say, ‘We are protesting to show that although hatred and bigotry won this election, our generation refuses to be complacent in the face of racism, xenophobia, misogyny, Islamophobia and ableism. We are protesting to stand in with marginalized people who will be most affected by this upcoming presidency.’

The protest is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Holladay Park.

Hundreds of students walked out of class and marched through Portland streets on Nov. 14 to protest the recent election of Donald Trump.
