PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Two days after the presidential election, a Gresham man was surrounded by rioters who vandalized his car and smashed his windows, and he says it was because he said he would support President-elect Trump.

On November 10, Valentin Muntyan was driving downtown with friends when protesters blocked him on the street.

He said they ripped an American flag off his Jeep and started peppering him with questions.

“I told them I’m a U.S. citizen and I am proud to be a citizen of this country, and that’s why I have U.S. flags,” he recalled. “And they asked me, ‘Do you support Trump?’  and I said, ‘Yes, he’s the newly elected president and I support him.’ that’s when everything got violent.”

Muntyan recorded cell phone video showing demonstrators yelling at him and bragging that he was surrounded.

At first, the protesters just used words, but then it became destructive when one man smashed out his headlight and another came back and shattered his windshield.

Muntyan never imagined it would go so far.

“I wasn’t thinking it would get to that, but we got scared when they started beating the Jeep and smashing and spray painting the doors,” he said.

Muntyan managed to drive away without getting hurt, but his Jeep didn’t fare so well.

Police arrested 20-year-old Gavin Hotchkiss for vandalizing the car and other property, and Muntyan testified before a grand jury Monday about another suspect, though he said that this is not what he wanted.

“I’m not happy for them to be in jail, but they have to be responsible for… this is a peaceful city and we want everyone to be peaceful,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who’s elected president.”

Muntyan moved to the U.S. from the Ukraine 16 years ago, and while he wouldn’t say who he voted for, he says he supports Donald Trump now because he is our president-elect.
