VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Vancouver Police are investigating after a diamond engagement ring was stolen right out of a woman’s hands during a sale turned scam on Saturday.

Stacy Bone decided to sell her pear-shaped diamond ring on an internet marketplace called Offer Up, similar to Craigslist.

After fending off some obvious scammers, she was contacted by a man who appeared to be a serious buyer. He said he wanted the ring because he was proposing to his girlfriend.

“He came along and seemed really interested and wanted to know the details,” Bone told Fox 12, adding that the ‘buyer’ wanted to meet in person in a public place and was offering cash.

They met Saturday at the Vancouver Mall, where a jeweler at Macy’s verified the authenticity of the ring. The ‘buyer’ said he wanted appraisal papers and a bill-of-sale, so Bone ran an errand to get them. She, and a friend who was with her the entire time, returned to the mall parking lot to finish the sale.

“He handed me a wad of hundreds, and as he put them in my hand I could feel that they felt like printer paper, fake money, right away,” she said. “I think he saw the expression on my face and his first reaction was to reach in and grab the ring and run.”

Bone chased him through the parking lot and back inside Macy’s, where she said he pepper-sprayed an employee and kept running through the mall.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh my God, does he have a gun?’” she said, when she saw him reaching down. “But then I saw it was a can and I saw the stream [of spray].”

Bone said the man ran back outside through a different mall exit, where a woman in a white Ford Taurus wagon was waiting with the car running.

“He opened up the back seat and threw the ring in and he saw me as he was doing that and just threw his arm out and hit me right in the face,” Bone said. “The car started going and I tried to hold on seeing if I could get in there, and she just peeled out and I let go because I didn’t want to get run over.”

The suspect was caught on surveillance video at the mall, and Vancouver Police are pouring over the images to try and identify him.

Now Bone is hoping you recognize the man, who she describes as in his late 30’s, around 6 feet tall and thin, with dark hair, a goatee and a dark-colored front tooth.

He went by Michael McNeil on his Offer Up account, but Bone isn’t sure that’s his real name. She said he deleted his online account after he stole the ring.

If you recognize him, call Vancouver Police.
