WOODLAND, WA (KPTV) -

Police are conducting a homicide investigation after a man was found dead inside a burned home in Woodland on Tuesday morning.

Woodland fire crews received a report about a fire at a home in the 2000 block of Dahlia Street around 4:34 a.m.

Firefighters arrived and were quickly able to extinguish the small fire, but later discovered a 63-year-old man dead inside the house, according to a spokesperson from Woodland police.

Fire crews said there were obvious signs of foul play and the investigation was turned over to the Woodland Police Department. The fire was determined to have been intentionally set.

Firefighters at first believed the house had been booby trapped and called a Portland bomb squad to the scene. After further investigation, it became clear there was no danger.

There was only one person inside the home at the time. The victim's name has not been released.

Friends arriving at the scene described the victim as a nice man who lived alone and loved to go fishing. He also had a pet dog.

"He's done a lot of nice things for other neighbors that I've heard and I've interacted with him a couple of times and he just doesn't seem to bother anybody," said neighbor Connie Kingrey. "I don't understand why somebody would want to do this to him."

Investigators have not released any suspect information or other details about this case. Police remained at the scene all day.

"We understand that there is an interest to know details surrounding the death of the victim but we do not want to release details that would compromise the investigation," according to a statement from the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact Sgt. Brad Thurman at 360-577-3092.
