ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

Police are searching for the poacher or poachers who shot and killed two elk and left the animals to waste on private property near St. Helens.

Troopers located a cow elk and a five-point bull elk near Smith Road between Robinette Road and Dart Creek Road at 7 a.m. Monday.

Police were able to salvage the elk and the meat will be donated to charity.

A reward up to $1,000 is being offered by the Oregon Hunters Association Turn-In-Poacher program and the Columbia County Chapter of the Oregon Hunter's Association for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Justin Morgan at 503-396-2408 or justin.morgan2@state.or.us. The TIP hotline may also be called at 1-800-452-7888. Tipsters can remain anonymous.

A similar case happened in Union County last week, with two bull elk illegally killed and left to waste near Elgin.
