Last minute shoppers brave the 'holiday hustle'

Posted: Updated:

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, the road isn’t the only place you’ll find traffic jams and long lines.

Fred Meyer says Wednesday and Thursday are some of the busiest days of the season for shoppers.

FOX 12 caught up with some last minute shoppers at the Burlingame Fred Meyer in southwest Portland to find out how they’re surviving the holiday rush.

Whether the shopping list is short and sweet, or perhaps a bit longer, last minute shopping can be stressful.

“I’m here for flour, milk, eggs, cabbage, a roast, ham, turkey, we literally need everything,” said Jeanise Herrell, who stopped in at Freddy’s Wednesday night.

Herrell was planning a small, low-key Thanksgiving meal, until her friends had other ideas.

“We are getting a bunch of last minute things to have people over,” said Herrell.

If you found yourself in the midst of the holiday hustle - you were one of many.

“Today is the busiest day for Thanksgiving,” said David Leith, manager of the Burlingame Fred Meyer.

Even with reduced hours, Leith says Turkey Day will also be bustling.

“Peak time for business is right around 2 p.m., employees are all up front, customers have poured in and we have lines up front,” said Leith.

So if you forgot to pick up the pie, or need an extra serving of stuffing, and find yourself in a crowded store, Herrell has some advice.

“Go with a list and a plan, because it’s difficult to remember everything when you walk through the aisles and you’re tempted by so much,” Herrell told FOX 12.

If you’re turned off by the crowds of last minute Thanksgiving shopping, then you probably aren’t the type to be up early for Black Friday, either.

“Definitely not, we are going right back to shutting ourselves in [for Black Friday],” Herrell said.
